Collection consists of diaries, memoirs, correspondence, and business and professional records related to the Akahori family. The majority of the collection is made up of Masaru Akahori's business and professional records from the Akahori Legal Office (1924-33). The collection also contains 56 diaries (1910-65) many of which were kept by Masaru. Also includes documents and records on war time internment of the Akahoris, material related to the Town crier, and personal correspondence.

The Japanese American Research Project (originally named the Issei History Project) was initiated by Wakamatsu Shigeo, President of the Japanese American citizens League (JACL) in 1960.
